A cold range means no live ammunition is present and all firearms are cleared. This setup allows only non-firing tasks, such as handling the firearm safely and performing maintenance—clearing, inspecting, cleaning, lubricating, and verifying safeties. With no rounds to chamber, there’s no opportunity to fire, so activities must stay within those limits. Live-fire activities or any practice with live rounds are not permitted on a cold range, which is why handling or maintenance only is the correct choice.
